How to Measure Your Garden and Calculate the Right Quantity of Lawn Grass

One of the most common mistakes homeowners make when ordering natural lawn grass sod is either overordering (wasting money) or underordering (leaving bare patches). Accurate measurement of your lawn area takes just 10 minutes and saves significant hassle and cost.

Step 1: Identify the Shape of Your Lawn Area

Most garden areas fall into three basic shapes — or combinations of them:

• Rectangular/Square: Easiest to calculate
• Triangular or L-shaped: Break into smaller rectangles
• Irregular/Curved: Grid method (explained below)

Step 2: Calculate Area by Shape

• Rectangle: Length (ft) × Width (ft) = Area in sq ft
• Triangle: (Base × Height) ÷ 2 = Area in sq ft
• Circle: 3.14 × Radius × Radius = Area in sq ft
• L-Shape: Divide into 2 rectangles, calculate each separately, then add them together

Step 3: The Grid Method for Irregular Shapes

For curved or irregular garden boundaries: draw your lawn area on graph paper where each square = 1 sq ft. Count all the full squares and add half the partial squares. This gives a reliable estimate within ±5%.

Step 4: Add 10% Buffer for Cutting Waste

Always order 10% more grass than your measured area. This accounts for cutting waste at corners, edges, and any irregular shapes. For example, if your lawn area measures 500 sq ft, order 550 sq ft of grass sod.

Step 5: Subtract Non-Grass Areas

Deduct the areas of flower beds, trees, pathways, ponds, or any hardscaping within your garden boundary from the total area before ordering.

Quick Reference Example

• Garden: 30 ft × 20 ft = 600 sq ft
• Minus pathway (5 ft × 4 ft): −20 sq ft
• Minus flower bed (circular, 3 ft radius): −28 sq ft
• Net lawn area: 552 sq ft
• Add 10% buffer: 552 + 55 = 607 sq ft to order
