How to Maintain Natural Lawn Grass in Indian Summer: 7 Essential Tips

Written by Elite Green Grass Farm

Keeping Your Lawn Green Through North India's Brutal Summer

The months from April to June test every lawn across Ghaziabad, Noida, and Delhi NCR. Temperatures soaring above 42°C, hot dry winds (loo), and virtually zero rainfall make summer the hardest season for natural lawn grass. But with the right care routine, your lawn can stay green and healthy even through peak summer.

Here are 7 expert tips from the team at Elite Green Grass Farm — growers with years of experience managing grass through Indian summer conditions:

Tip 1: Water Deep, Water Early

The single most important rule in summer is to water deeply and early. Water your lawn before 7 AM — before the sun intensifies. Deep watering (30–40 minutes) encourages roots to grow downward seeking moisture, making the lawn more drought-resistant. Shallow, frequent watering in the afternoon causes the surface to scorch while roots stay shallow.

Tip 2: Raise Your Mowing Height

In summer, raise your lawn mower blade to a higher setting — leaving grass blades 2 to 3 inches long instead of cutting them short. Longer blades shade the soil surface, reducing evaporation significantly and protecting the root zone from direct heat.

Tip 3: Avoid Fertilizing in Peak Heat

Do not apply nitrogen-heavy fertilizers during May–June. High nitrogen during peak heat can "burn" the grass and cause browning. Wait for monsoon onset to resume fertilization.

Tip 4: Apply Mulch at Lawn Edges

Add a thin layer of organic mulch (dry grass clippings, wood chips, or coconut husk) around the edges of your lawn and garden beds to lock in soil moisture and reduce evaporative water loss by up to 30%.

Tip 5: Watch for Yellowing — It May Not Be Heat

Summer yellowing is sometimes misidentified as heat stress when it's actually caused by iron deficiency or fungal root rot from overwatering. Check: if yellowing starts in patches (not uniformly), it's likely fungal. Reduce watering frequency and apply a copper-based fungicide.

Tip 6: Let Bermuda Grass Go Semi-Dormant

Bermuda and Selection-1 grass naturally semi-dormant in extreme heat — going from bright green to a duller olive shade. This is normal self-protection. Continue watering every 2 days and the grass will bounce back vigorously at monsoon onset.

Tip 7: Avoid Heavy Foot Traffic in Peak Summer

During summer, grass recovery from foot traffic is very slow. Restrict lawn usage during the hottest months, especially for children's play areas, to prevent compacted bare patches.
